Hospitalist at Surgical HospitalIn 2004 OakLeaf Surgical Hospital implemented a hospitalist program. Hospitalists are physicians that specialize in the care of inpatients who have been admitted to the hospital for extended care. The hospitalist, usually a specialist in internal medicine or pulmonary/critical care, manages the patient’s care by monitoring their progress throughout their stay in the hospital. The hospitalist program at the OakLeaf Surgical Hospital has been positive for the patient. The average length of time required for a patient to be in the hospital has been shortened, complication rates have been reduced and costs for the patient and the hospital have gone down.
Hospitalist Anton kidess, MD, Eau Claire Medical Clinic, reviews patient orders with Jean Anders, RN “Safe and effective quality patient care is always our first priority,” said Dr. Irfane Khatib, Medical Director, OakLeaf Surgical Hospital. “The addition of the hospitalist program has allowed for continuity of care for the inpatient.” Patients appreciate the support and concern of a physician that is monitoring them and their overall condition from their admission, through surgery and continuing until they are released. This may include arranging for any follow-up that might be needed after the patient has been discharged. The hospitalist program provides an excellent means for maintaining good communication between the many medical specialists, staff, the patient’s primary care physician and friends and family during the patient’s hospital stay. “Overall patient satisfaction with the hospitalist program has far exceeded our expectations,” said Khatib. “Patient surveys have reflected high patient support.” Eau Claire Medical Clinic physicians provide hospitalist services for all inpatients admitted to the OakLeaf Surgical Hospital.
